Zcash seals $1.7 billion shielded pool as Ironwood upgrade activates

Zcash has activated its Ironwood network upgrade, permanently sealing roughly $1.7 billion worth of privacy coins inside a shielded pool while retiring the Orchard system, where a counterfeiting vulnerability went unnoticed for four years.

What the Ironwood Upgrade Does

The Ironwood upgrade marks a significant turning point for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency by decommissioning Orchard, the shielded pool that had quietly harbored a serious flaw. The bug, which could theoretically have allowed counterfeit coins to be created, remained undetected within the system for four years before it was addressed.

With the upgrade now live, every coin held inside the sealed pool must exit through a controlled mechanism designed to prevent any abuse of that dormant vulnerability. The gate enforces a strict limit: total withdrawals cannot exceed the sum of verified deposits.

Guarding Against Counterfeit Risk

By capping outflows at the level of confirmed deposits, the network ensures that even if counterfeit tokens were somehow minted through the old flaw, they could not be extracted and injected into circulation.
