Lido, the largest liquid staking protocol on Ethereum, has rolled out a major upgrade that could shrink the network's validator count by roughly one-third by consolidating how its operators run validators.
What the Upgrade Does
The new release, called Curated Module v2, changes the way Lido's professional node operators manage the validators that secure the Ethereum network. Rather than running a sprawling number of individual validators, operators can now consolidate their stake into fewer, larger validators.
The move takes advantage of recent changes to Ethereum's own staking mechanics, which lifted the previous ceiling on how much a single validator could hold. By packing more staked ether into each validator, Lido's operators can dramatically cut down on the total number of active validators without reducing the amount of ETH securing the chain.
Fewer validators doing the same job could ease one of Ethereum's most persistent scaling headaches.
