Storj files for bankruptcy, explores equity path for tokenholders

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Decentralized cloud storage firm Storj has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but the company says its network will keep running as it pursues a court-sanctioned plan to convert token holdings into equity.

Business Continues During Restructuring

Storj emphasized that the bankruptcy filing does not spell the end of its operations. The decentralized storage network, which relies on a distributed base of node operators to store customer data, is expected to continue functioning throughout the Chapter 11 process.

Chapter 11 is a form of bankruptcy that allows a company to reorganize its finances and debts while remaining in business, rather than liquidating its assets and shutting down. The move gives Storj legal breathing room to restructure while attempting to preserve value for its stakeholders.

The network stays online while the company hunts for a way to turn tokens into ownership.

For users and node operators, the message from the company is one of continuity. Storj has framed the filing as a strategic step aimed at stabilizing the business and charting a new course rather than winding it down.

An Equity Path for STORJ Holders

Perhaps the most notable element of the filing is Storj's stated intention to explore a court-approved mechanism that would grant STORJ token holders a form of equity ownership in the company. Such an arrangement would represent an unusual outcome for a bankruptcy proceeding involving a crypto project.

If approved, the mechanism could reshape the relationship between the company and its community of token holders, potentially giving them a direct stake in the restructured business. However, the details would need to clear the hurdles of the bankruptcy court before taking effect.

Key considerations for the process include:

  • Whether the court signs off on any token-to-equity conversion
  • How the network is maintained while restructuring proceeds
  • The treatment of existing STORJ holders under the plan

The proposal underscores the growing legal and financial complexity facing decentralized infrastructure projects, which must navigate traditional corporate frameworks even as they operate blockchain-based networks. Token holders will be watching closely as the case unfolds in court.
