Robinhood’s crypto volume increases 61% in August, still down 38% YoY

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Robinhood reported a sharp rebound in cryptocurrency trading last month, with volumes climbing 61% from July, even as activity remained well below where it stood a year ago.

## A Monthly Rebound With a Yearly Shortfall The trading platform saw its crypto volumes recover strongly in August compared to the prior month, signaling renewed appetite among traders after a slower summer stretch. Despite the month-over-month gains, the figures still trailed year-earlier levels by 38%, underscoring how much the market has cooled since the previous cycle.

Much of the heavy lifting came from Bitstamp, the exchange Robinhood acquired to expand its footprint in institutional and international markets. Bitstamp accounted for $10.1 billion of Robinhood's total August crypto volume, making it a central pillar of the company's digital asset business.

The rebound was real, but the year-over-year picture shows just how far crypto activity has fallen from its peak.

## The App Story Versus the Bigger Picture Trading directly on the Robinhood app told a more subdued story. Volume through the consumer-facing application dropped 46% from a year earlier, reflecting reduced retail engagement compared to the more frenzied conditions of the prior period.

The contrast highlights how Robinhood's crypto strategy has increasingly leaned on its acquisitions and broader infrastructure rather than its core retail app alone. Bitstamp's contribution helped offset weaker app-based figures and kept overall volumes buoyant.

Key takeaways from the August data include:

  • Crypto volumes rose 61% month over month
  • Total activity remained down 38% year over year
  • Bitstamp contributed $10.1 billion to the monthly total
  • Robinhood app trading declined 46% from a year earlier

For Robinhood, the mixed results suggest that while short-term momentum is building, a full return to prior-year trading levels will depend on sustained market enthusiasm and continued growth across its expanded crypto operations.
