Harmony's native token ONE plunged roughly 40% following an apparent exploit that saw an attacker mint billions of new tokens, an amount equivalent to about a quarter of the network's total supply.
What Happened
The Harmony blockchain suffered a security incident in which an attacker allegedly created around 4 billion ONE tokens out of thin air. The sudden influx of newly minted coins triggered a sharp sell-off, with the token's price collapsing as traders rushed to exit positions.
The scale of the mint — representing roughly 25% of the existing token supply — raised immediate concerns about dilution and the long-term integrity of the network's economics. Such an event effectively debases the value of tokens held by legitimate users.
An attacker minting a quarter of a token's supply is among the most damaging exploits a blockchain can suffer.
Harmony's Response
In a statement issued during Asian morning hours, the Harmony team said it was coordinating with cryptocurrency exchanges in an effort to freeze the affected funds before they could be liquidated or moved out of reach. The team also indicated it was preparing a software fix to address the vulnerability that enabled the mint.
Freezing funds at the exchange level is one of the few tools projects have to limit damage after an exploit, since it can prevent an attacker from cashing out illicitly obtained tokens. The success of such measures typically depends on how quickly exchanges act.
Key developments so far include:
- An attacker allegedly minted roughly 4 billion ONE tokens
- The token's price dropped about 40% in the aftermath
- Harmony is working with exchanges to freeze funds
- A software patch is being prepared
A Troubled History
The incident revives painful memories for Harmony, which previously fell victim to one of the crypto industry's more notable bridge hacks. That earlier breach dealt a lasting blow to confidence in the project and its infrastructure.
Repeated security failures can be especially difficult for a blockchain to recover from, as they erode trust among users, developers and investors. How Harmony handles the recovery — including whether affected funds can be frozen and whether the underlying flaw is fully resolved — will likely determine the token's trajectory in the days ahead.
