An attacker has drained roughly $200,000 from an XRP cross-chain bridge after the platform's software mistakenly treated fabricated deposits as legitimate, allowing the theft of real tokens held in reserve.

How the Attack Unfolded

The exploit hinged on a flaw in how the bridge validated incoming deposits. Rather than confirming that tokens were genuinely backed, the software accepted counterfeit records as real, opening the door for the attacker to mint XRP that never existed.

Using that unbacked XRP created on a separate blockchain, the attacker then swapped the fake tokens for authentic XRP sitting in the bridge's reserves. The maneuver effectively converted worthless, invented balances into legitimate assets that could be withdrawn.

The attacker turned tokens that never existed into real money by exploiting a single flawed assumption in the bridge's code.

Cross-chain bridges, which let users move assets between different blockchain networks, have repeatedly proven to be among the most vulnerable pieces of infrastructure in crypto. Their reliance on accurate verification of deposits and reserves makes any validation error potentially catastrophic.

Response and Fallout

Following the discovery of the breach, the bridge was immediately halted to prevent further losses. The pause is a standard defensive measure meant to freeze activity while operators assess the damage and secure remaining funds.

The operator has also escalated the matter to law enforcement, filing a complaint with the FBI in an effort to trace the stolen assets and identify those responsible.
