Cboe wants to turn VIX into a never-ending trade

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Cboe Global Markets is exploring a plan to transform the VIX, Wall Street's widely watched "fear gauge," into a round-the-clock tradable product, drawing inspiration from the always-on nature of cryptocurrency markets.

A Crypto-Style Overhaul for the Fear Gauge

The VIX, formally known as the Cboe Volatility Index, measures expected swings in the S&P 500 and has long served as a barometer for market anxiety. Traditionally, products tied to the index trade during conventional market hours, leaving investors unable to react to overnight developments until trading resumes.

Cboe's ambition is to change that by making VIX exposure continuously available, mirroring the way digital asset markets operate without closing bells or weekend breaks.

Wall Street's most famous anxiety meter may soon never sleep.

Borrowing From Crypto's Playbook

The appeal of a never-ending trade reflects how cryptocurrency trading has reshaped expectations around market access. Bitcoin and other tokens trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that model has increasingly influenced how traditional exchanges think about availability and demand.

For Cboe, extending the VIX into an always-on instrument could capture activity that currently spills into off-hours, when geopolitical events, earnings surprises, or macroeconomic shocks can abruptly shift sentiment.

Such a move would also underscore the growing convergence between legacy finance and the structures pioneered in crypto markets, where continuous trading has become the norm rather than the exception.

  • The VIX gauges expected volatility in the S&P 500.
  • Crypto markets trade around the clock, inspiring the concept.
  • Continuous trading could let investors hedge during overnight events.

What It Means for Traders

If realized, a 24/7 VIX product would give institutional and retail participants new tools to manage risk outside standard hours. It could prove especially valuable during periods of heightened uncertainty, when market-moving news frequently breaks when exchanges are closed.

The initiative remains in the exploratory phase, and any rollout would likely face regulatory and operational hurdles. Still, the concept signals how deeply crypto's always-on philosophy is beginning to permeate even the most established corners of traditional finance.
