Bitwise launches self-custodied tokenized stock portfolios with Coinbase

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

Bitwise Asset Management has rolled out a set of self-custodied tokenized stock portfolios in partnership with Coinbase, giving eligible non-US investors a way to hold blockchain-based equities directly in their own wallets while benefiting from automated portfolio management.

How the Portfolios Work

The new offering combines Coinbase's tokenized stock products with Bitwise's portfolio construction expertise. Rather than requiring investors to hand over control of their assets to a centralized platform, the portfolios are designed for self-custody, meaning users retain ownership of the underlying tokens in wallets they control.

A key feature is automatic rebalancing. The portfolios adjust holdings over time to maintain target allocations, sparing investors from having to manually buy and sell individual tokenized shares to stay aligned with their intended strategy.

Investors can now hold tokenized equities in their own wallets while a professional strategy handles the rebalancing behind the scenes.

The collaboration reflects a broader industry push to bring traditional financial instruments on-chain, blending the convenience of managed investment products with the transparency and control associated with blockchain-based assets.

Who Can Access It

For now, the product is limited to eligible investors outside the United States. Tokenized equities remain in a regulatory gray area in many jurisdictions, and US securities rules have made it difficult to offer such products domestically.

The launch adds to a growing wave of tokenization efforts from major crypto and finance firms seeking to represent stocks, bonds and other assets as digital tokens. Supporters argue the model can lower costs, enable round-the-clock trading and expand access to markets that were previously harder to reach.

Key aspects of the Bitwise and Coinbase offering include:

  • Self-custody, allowing investors to hold assets in their own wallets
  • Automatic rebalancing of tokenized stock allocations
  • Availability restricted to eligible non-US investors

As tokenized real-world assets continue to attract attention from institutions and retail users alike, partnerships like this one signal that established players are betting the sector will become a lasting part of the financial landscape.
