Bitmine buys 28k ETH, completes 97% of treasury accumulation goal

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Bitmine Immersion Technologies has purchased another 28,000 Ether, pushing the company's holdings to roughly 97% of its stated goal of acquiring 5% of the total ETH supply, even as the firm sits on a multibillion-dollar paper loss on its treasury.

Accumulation Nears Completion

The latest acquisition brings Bitmine within striking distance of its ambitious target of controlling 5% of all Ether in circulation. The company, chaired by Fundstrat's Tom Lee, has aggressively built out its ETH treasury over recent months, positioning itself as one of the largest corporate holders of the second-biggest cryptocurrency.

The 28,000 ETH purchase reflects the firm's continued conviction in Ethereum as a long-term reserve asset, mirroring a strategy popularized by companies stacking Bitcoin on their balance sheets. By approaching the 97% completion mark, Bitmine signals that its treasury build-out is entering its final stretch.

Bitmine is now just a fraction away from owning one in every twenty Ether ever created.

A Steep Unrealized Loss

Despite the accumulation milestone, the strategy has come at a cost. Bitmine is currently facing an unrealized loss of approximately $5.1 billion on its primary treasury asset, a stark reminder of the volatility that accompanies large crypto positions.

Because the losses remain on paper, they would only be realized if the company sold its holdings at current prices. Treasury-focused firms typically emphasize long-term horizons, betting that market recovery will eventually turn such deficits into gains.

The situation underscores the double-edged nature of aggressive digital asset accumulation:

  • Massive holdings offer significant upside if Ether rallies.
  • Sharp price swings can produce enormous paper losses in the interim.
  • Timing the market remains a persistent challenge for treasury strategies.

For Tom Lee's team, the coming period will test whether the conviction behind the ETH bet pays off or whether the unrealized losses deepen further.
