Circle agrees to buy cross-border payments firm Tazapay for $400 million

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has agreed to acquire Singapore-based cross-border payments company Tazapay in a deal valued at roughly $400 million, a move that could sharply expand its reach into traditional banking rails around the world.

Bridging Stablecoins and Local Banking

The acquisition is designed to give Circle regulated "last-mile" infrastructure, the connective tissue that links stablecoin transactions to conventional local banking systems. For years, one of the biggest hurdles facing digital dollars has been converting them into local currencies and moving funds through established financial networks in different jurisdictions.

Tazapay specializes in exactly that kind of plumbing, operating cross-border payment services that span multiple countries and comply with local regulatory requirements. By folding those capabilities into its operations, Circle aims to make it easier for businesses and consumers to move between USDC and the fiat systems they use day to day.

The deal is a bet that stablecoins are only as useful as the banking connections that surround them.

Strategic Push for Global Payments

The purchase reflects Circle's broader ambition to position USDC as a backbone for global commerce rather than merely a crypto-native settlement token. Regulated infrastructure in key markets could help the company court businesses that need reliable, compliant ways to send and receive money internationally.

The transaction carries particular weight given Circle's growing profile following its journey into public markets and the intensifying competition among stablecoin issuers seeking dominance in payments.

Key elements of the deal include:

  • A total valuation of approximately $400 million
  • Tazapay's Singapore base and regulated cross-border operations
  • Enhanced "last-mile" connectivity between USDC and local banks
  • A strategic focus on serving cross-border business payments

If completed, the acquisition would mark one of Circle's more significant infrastructure plays, signaling that the company sees ownership of regulated payment networks as central to the next phase of stablecoin adoption.
