BitMEX ends crypto trading, keeps withdrawals open after closure

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

BitMEX, one of the earliest cryptocurrency derivatives exchanges, has officially shut down its trading operations after more than 11 years in business, though the platform is keeping withdrawals open and urging customers to move their funds out.

A Pioneer Exits the Market

The closure marks the end of an era for a platform that helped shape the crypto derivatives landscape. Launched over a decade ago, BitMEX became known for popularizing perpetual futures contracts and high-leverage trading, drawing a global base of traders during the industry's formative years.

With exchange operations now halted, users can no longer place trades on the platform. The company has shifted its focus toward an orderly wind-down, prioritizing the safe return of customer assets rather than continued market activity.

A platform that once defined crypto derivatives trading is now telling its users to take their money and leave.

Withdrawals Remain Open

Despite ending its trading services, BitMEX has confirmed that withdrawal functionality stays active. The exchange is encouraging account holders to promptly remove their balances to avoid complications as the shutdown proceeds.

Customers are being advised to act sooner rather than later. Keeping funds on a platform that has ceased operations carries added risk, and the company's messaging makes clear that self-custody or transfer to another service is the recommended path forward.

  • Trading operations have been fully discontinued
  • Withdrawals remain available for users to reclaim funds
  • Account holders are urged to move assets without delay

The wind-down underscores the shifting dynamics of the crypto exchange sector, where regulatory pressures, competition and market cycles continue to reshape which platforms survive. For BitMEX, a name synonymous with the early growth of leveraged crypto trading, the priority now is ensuring users can retrieve what they hold before the door closes for good.
