XRP Ledger retries upgrade that lets banks split payment and compliance duties

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

The XRP Ledger is once again attempting to activate a technical upgrade that would allow businesses to divide payment and compliance responsibilities across different accounts, with the change potentially going live as soon as October 5.

What the Upgrade Does

The proposed feature would let account holders delegate specific, limited powers to a secondary account without surrendering full control over their funds or operations. In practice, that means a company could authorize one account to execute payments while granting another the ability to approve or vet customers.

This granular approach to permissions is designed to appeal to banks and other regulated institutions, which typically need to keep transaction-processing functions separate from compliance and customer-verification duties. By splitting these roles at the protocol level, the upgrade aims to make the ledger more attractive for enterprise and institutional use.

Businesses could hand off narrow tasks like making payments or approving customers without ever giving away the keys to the kingdom.

A Second Attempt

This marks a renewed effort to push the upgrade through, following an earlier attempt to bring the functionality online. If validators on the network reach the required consensus threshold, the change could activate on October 5.

Activation on the XRP Ledger depends on a supermajority of validators signaling support over a sustained period, a governance mechanism intended to ensure broad agreement before any protocol-level change takes effect.

Key aspects of the delegation feature include:

  • Assigning limited authority to a separate account without transferring full control
  • Enabling dedicated accounts for payments versus customer approval
  • Targeting the compliance needs of banks and regulated firms

Should the upgrade succeed, it would expand the range of operational structures available to institutions building on the XRP Ledger, reinforcing efforts to position the network for regulated financial activity.
