Bitcoin trades near $78,000 as memecoins, small caps lead a broad crypto retreat

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Bitcoin slipped toward $78,000 in the past day as a wave of selling pressure swept across the digital asset market, with speculative tokens and smaller-cap coins bearing the brunt of the decline.

A Broad-Based Selloff

The world's largest cryptocurrency dropped roughly 2% over a 24-hour stretch to trade near $78,111, but the pullback extended well beyond Bitcoin itself. According to the CoinDesk 100 index, 95 of its 100 constituent tokens ended the period in the red, signaling a market-wide retreat rather than an isolated dip.

Much of the damage was inflicted overnight, when thin liquidity and cascading sell orders amplified downward moves. By the time trading volumes returned to normal, the losses had already been largely locked in across the board.

When nearly every token on the index is bleeding, it's a sign the mood has soured across the entire market.

Memecoins and Small Caps Hit Hardest

The steepest declines came from memecoins and lower-capitalization projects, which tend to be more volatile and sensitive to shifts in risk appetite. These assets typically rally hardest during bullish stretches and fall fastest when sentiment turns cautious.

The uneven pain highlights a familiar pattern in crypto markets, where investors rotate out of riskier plays and toward relatively safer large-cap assets during periods of uncertainty. Even so, Bitcoin's own 2% decline shows that no corner of the market was fully insulated.

Key takeaways from the session:

  • Bitcoin fell about 2% to around $78,111
  • 95 of the 100 CoinDesk 100 tokens closed lower
  • Memecoins and small caps led the losses
  • Most of the selling occurred overnight

For traders, the episode serves as a reminder of how quickly momentum can shift, particularly among speculative assets that lack the deeper liquidity and institutional backing of the market's largest names.
