Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds closed out July with net positive inflows, drawing in $172.4 million over the month even as investors pulled back significantly in the closing weeks.
A Month of Two Halves
July began with strong momentum for spot Bitcoin ETFs, with investors piling into the products during the first several weeks. That enthusiasm helped push the funds into positive territory overall, delivering $172.4 million in net inflows for the month.
The picture shifted as July drew to a close, however. A wave of late-month selling ate into earlier gains, tempering what had looked like it could be a more robust monthly total. Despite the pullback, the funds managed to hold onto their positive standing by the final tally.
July ended in the green, but a burst of late-month selling nearly wiped out the gains.
The Year-to-Date Reality
While July offered a modest win, the broader story for spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 remains more challenging. The products sit roughly $5.3 billion in the red on a year-to-date basis, a deficit built largely during earlier stretches of heavy outflows.
Withdrawals in May and June proved especially damaging, dragging the funds' cumulative performance deep into negative territory. Those months of redemptions continue to weigh on the overall figures, overshadowing the positive momentum seen in July.
The mixed results underscore the volatility that has defined investor sentiment toward Bitcoin ETFs this year. Strong inflows in some periods have been offset by sharp reversals in others, leaving the products struggling to build sustained momentum.
- July net inflows: $172.4 million
- Year-to-date position: roughly $5.3 billion negative
- Heaviest outflows recorded in May and June
For now, the July gains provide a small measure of encouragement for supporters of the funds, but the path back to positive annual figures remains a considerable distance away.
