A configuration error at a single hosting provider knocked nearly 29% of Solana's staked SOL offline last week, bringing the network unnervingly close to the 33% threshold that would have stalled its ability to finalize transactions.

What Went Wrong

The incident stemmed from a malformed default route at one hosting provider, a networking misconfiguration that abruptly severed connectivity for a large cluster of validators. Because so many operators relied on the same infrastructure, the fault cascaded across a significant slice of Solana's staking power in one blow.

At its peak, the outage pulled roughly 29% of staked SOL out of consensus participation. On Solana, more than one-third of stake must go offline before the network loses its ability to finalize blocks, meaning the event carried the chain about 86% of the way toward that dangerous line.
