XRP’s 44% rally brings leverage back, raising risk of sharper pullback

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

XRP's sharp rebound has drawn traders back into leveraged positions, a shift that analysts warn could set the stage for a more violent price reversal if momentum stalls. Data from CryptoQuant shows the token's estimated leverage ratio on Binance has climbed to its highest level since January, underscoring how quickly speculative appetite has returned following the recent rally.

Leverage Builds as Traders Pile In

The renewed enthusiasm follows a 44% advance that has reignited bullish bets across derivatives markets. According to the on-chain analytics firm, long positions now clearly outnumber shorts, signaling that a large share of participants are wagering on further upside.

Perhaps more telling is the imbalance between futures and spot activity. Futures volume is running at more than five times the level of spot trading, a sign that price action is being driven heavily by speculation rather than direct buying and selling of the asset itself.

When leverage stacks up this fast, the market becomes a coiled spring — and springs snap in both directions.

Why Elevated Leverage Raises the Stakes

High leverage cuts both ways. While borrowed capital can amplify gains during a rally, it also magnifies the risk of a rapid unwind. When prices dip, over-leveraged long positions can be liquidated in cascades, accelerating declines far beyond what organic selling would produce.

The current setup mirrors conditions that have historically preceded sharp corrections in crypto markets. With long accounts crowded to one side and futures dominating volume, even a modest pullback could trigger a chain of forced selling.

Key factors traders are watching include:

  • The estimated leverage ratio hitting an eight-month high on Binance
  • Long positions substantially outweighing short positions
  • Futures volume exceeding spot activity by more than fivefold

For now, the momentum remains firmly to the upside. But the buildup of leverage suggests that XRP's rally has grown increasingly fragile, leaving the market vulnerable to a swift and painful reversal should sentiment shift.
