Whitehats move 52 bitcoin from the Coldcard hack to a recovery trust

By Malik Sokolov · · 2 min read

A group of ethical hackers has recovered 52 bitcoin tied to a Coldcard-related theft, transferring the funds to a dedicated recovery trust in an effort to return the assets to their rightful owner, according to research from Galaxy Digital.

The Recovery Effort

The whitehats moved the 52 BTC — worth a substantial sum at current prices — to a newly designated address that included an embedded OP_RETURN message. That message read "claim:cryptorecoverytrust dot com," signaling to the victim how they might go about reclaiming the stolen funds.

The use of an OP_RETURN field, which allows small amounts of data to be permanently recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain, served as a transparent, on-chain breadcrumb. Rather than quietly holding the recovered coins, the ethical hackers publicly flagged the transaction so the affected party could identify and pursue a claim.

Instead of vanishing with the coins, the whitehats left an on-chain message pointing the victim toward recovery.

Whitehats and On-Chain Signals

Whitehat hackers occupy a distinctive niche in the crypto ecosystem, often intercepting or recovering funds compromised in exploits with the stated goal of returning them to victims. Their actions stand in contrast to malicious actors who exploit vulnerabilities for personal gain.

Galaxy Digital's tracking of the movement highlights how blockchain analysis firms monitor large, unusual transfers to piece together the story behind on-chain activity. The permanent and public nature of Bitcoin transactions makes it possible for researchers to follow the trail of stolen or recovered assets.

Key details of the case include:

  • 52 BTC were moved to a recovery-focused address
  • The transaction carried an OP_RETURN message directing the victim to a claim site
  • Galaxy Digital identified and reported the movement

The episode underscores both the persistent security risks facing crypto holders and the growing role of ethical intervention in mitigating losses when hardware wallets and other tools are compromised.
