Lawmakers in Washington are pushing new legislation that would grant the federal government sweeping authority to slow down or completely shut off powerful artificial intelligence systems deemed to pose a threat, raising fresh debate over how far state control over advanced technology should extend.

What the Bill Proposes

The proposed AI Kill Switch Act would empower the Department of Homeland Security to order companies to throttle or fully disable so-called frontier AI models when they are judged to present a danger to public safety or national security. The measure is designed to give federal authorities a rapid response tool in the event that an advanced system behaves unpredictably or is used maliciously.

Under the framework, firms that ignore a government directive could face steep financial consequences. The legislation reportedly includes penalties reaching as high as $20 million for each day a company fails to comply with an order to restrict or halt its technology.
