What are perps, anyway? Everything you need to know about crypto’s hottest trading instrument

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Perpetual futures — better known across the industry as "perps" — have grown from a niche experiment into one of the most heavily traded financial instruments on the planet, drawing everyone from retail speculators to sophisticated institutional desks into the crypto derivatives market.

From BitMEX Experiment to Market Giant

Perpetual futures first appeared on the exchange BitMEX in 2015, introducing a novel twist on the traditional futures contract. Unlike conventional futures, which carry a fixed expiration date, perps never expire. That single design change turned out to be enormously influential, allowing traders to hold leveraged positions indefinitely without the hassle of rolling contracts forward.

In the years since, the product has spread across virtually every major crypto trading venue and now accounts for an outsized share of overall trading volume in the sector. What began as a clever workaround has become a foundational pillar of how digital assets are priced and traded.

A contract with no expiration date quietly became one of the most traded financial products in the world.

How Perps Actually Work

The mechanism that keeps a perpetual contract's price tethered to the underlying asset is the funding rate. Because there is no expiration to force convergence, exchanges use periodic payments between long and short traders to nudge the contract price back in line with the spot market. When demand for long positions runs hot, longs pay shorts, and vice versa.

Leverage is the other defining feature. Perps let traders control large positions with relatively small amounts of capital, amplifying both potential gains and potential losses. That combination of high leverage and around-the-clock availability is a big part of why the instrument has become so popular — and so risky.

Key characteristics that set perps apart include:

  • No expiration date, unlike traditional futures
  • A funding rate that keeps prices anchored to spot
  • High leverage that magnifies profits and losses
  • Continuous, 24/7 trading across global exchanges

Why They Dominate Crypto Trading

The appeal of perps lies in their flexibility. Traders can express bullish or bearish views, hedge existing holdings, or chase short-term moves without ever taking delivery of the underlying coin. For active market participants, that efficiency has made perps the default tool for gaining exposure.

Still, the same features that make perps attractive also make them treacherous. Steep leverage can wipe out positions quickly during volatile swings, and cascading liquidations have repeatedly rattled crypto markets. For
