US seeks forfeiture of $25M in crypto tied to romance, investment scams

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

The US Department of Justice has moved to seize more than $25 million in cryptocurrency that prosecutors say is tied to sprawling international romance and investment fraud operations, according to a newly filed forfeiture action.

The Allegations

Federal prosecutors allege the funds are linked to fraud and money-laundering networks that operate across borders, targeting victims through deceptive romance schemes and bogus investment opportunities. In these operations, scammers cultivate trust with victims, often over weeks or months, before persuading them to send money or funnel funds into fake cryptocurrency platforms that appear legitimate.

The forfeiture effort represents the government's attempt to claw back proceeds that authorities say were routed through digital assets to obscure their origins. Cryptocurrency's borderless nature has made it a favored tool for such schemes, complicating recovery efforts once funds leave a victim's wallet.

Once trust is built and the money moves, tracing stolen crypto across borders becomes a race against time.

A Growing Threat

So-called "pig butchering" scams, which blend romance manipulation with fraudulent investment pitches, have become one of the fastest-growing categories of online fraud. Victims are frequently lured through social media, dating apps, or unsolicited messages, then guided toward platforms designed to display fake profits that vanish when withdrawals are attempted.

Law enforcement agencies have increasingly turned to blockchain analytics to follow the movement of illicit funds and identify the wallets and exchanges used to launder proceeds. Successful forfeiture actions can, in some cases, allow authorities to return recovered assets to victims.

Key concerns highlighted by the case include:

  • The use of digital assets to move and conceal fraud proceeds internationally
  • The scale of losses inflicted on individual victims by coordinated networks
  • The challenges of recovering funds once they cross jurisdictional lines

The action underscores continued efforts by US authorities to combat crypto-enabled fraud and to disrupt the financial infrastructure that allows such schemes to flourish.
