US sanctions Iranian maritime firm, says it accepted Bitcoin to evade restrictions

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on an Iranian maritime firm, accusing it of accepting Bitcoin and other digital assets to sidestep restrictions and channel funds to the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Treasury Targets Crypto-Enabled Evasion

According to the US Treasury, the company known as HormuzSafe accepted Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as part of a scheme to evade existing sanctions. Officials allege that the digital assets were used to generate revenue for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a group long designated by Washington as a foreign terrorist organization.

The action reflects a broader pattern in which US authorities have increasingly focused on the intersection of digital assets and sanctions enforcement. As traditional financial channels remain closed to sanctioned entities, officials have warned that cryptocurrencies can offer an alternative route for moving value across borders.

Digital assets have become the new frontier in the battle over sanctions enforcement.

Growing Scrutiny of Digital Assets

By designating HormuzSafe, the Treasury signals its intent to cut off any revenue streams that could benefit Iran's security apparatus. Sanctions typically freeze any US-based assets tied to the named entity and bar American individuals and businesses from dealing with it.

The move underscores several themes that regulators have emphasized in recent enforcement actions:

  • Cryptocurrencies are being scrutinized as potential tools for sanctions evasion.
  • Maritime and shipping firms remain a focus given their role in trade flows.
  • Revenue generation for sanctioned military groups draws heightened attention.

The case adds to a growing list of enforcement measures targeting parties that allegedly use digital assets to bypass financial restrictions. As authorities sharpen their focus, the crypto industry faces continued pressure to demonstrate compliance and cooperate with regulators tracking illicit flows.
