US Bank tests proprietary stablecoin in cross-border Stellar transaction

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

U.S. Bank has completed a live pilot of its own stablecoin, moving the digital token across borders on the public Stellar blockchain in a test that signals growing appetite among traditional lenders for blockchain-based payments.

Inside the Pilot

The bank's proprietary token, dubbed USBDC, was transferred between the institution's North American and European entities during the trial. By carrying out the transaction on Stellar, a public blockchain often used for cross-border settlements, U.S. Bank demonstrated that a regulated lender can leverage open ledger technology to move value between its own subsidiaries.

The pilot focused on internal transfers rather than customer-facing payments, giving the bank a controlled environment to evaluate how a stablecoin might streamline the movement of funds across jurisdictions. Cross-border settlements have traditionally relied on correspondent banking networks that can be slow and costly.

A major U.S. lender just proved its own stablecoin can move money across the Atlantic on a public blockchain.

Why It Matters

The experiment reflects a broader trend of established financial institutions exploring stablecoins as a tool for faster, cheaper settlement. As regulatory clarity around dollar-pegged tokens improves in the United States, banks are increasingly willing to test proprietary digital assets rather than cede the space to crypto-native firms.

Key takeaways from the pilot include:

  • USBDC was moved between the bank's North American and European arms
  • The transaction settled on the public Stellar network
  • The trial centered on internal cross-border transfers

For now, the effort remains a test rather than a commercial product. Still, a bank of U.S. Bank's scale embracing stablecoin rails suggests that tokenized settlement is edging closer to the mainstream of traditional finance.
