Trump’s speech at Davos gives small boost to Crypto! Saylor buys $2.13B BTC! Blondish Interview!

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Cryptocurrency markets slumped sharply on Tuesday as Bitcoin cracked below the $88,000 threshold, triggering more than $1 billion in liquidations, even as institutional players and public companies pressed ahead with fresh digital asset ventures.

Markets Slide as Bitcoin Breaks Support

Digital assets fell in unison with a broader pullback in risk-on trading. Bitcoin dropped around 3% to trade near $88,200, while Ethereum led the losses with a 6% slide to roughly $2,905. The selling spread across the board, pushing most major tokens into negative territory.

The decline picked up speed as both Bitcoin and Solana broke through key technical support levels, intensifying the rout. Solana fell 2% to $127, and XRP slipped by a similar margin to hover around $1.88.

More than $1 billion in leveraged long positions were wiped out as Bitcoin sliced below $88,000, exposing how fast overextended bets can unravel.

Not everything sank in the red. MYX and ZRO bucked the trend, standing out as the day's top gainers with advances of 11% and 10%, respectively.

Institutions Keep Building

The market weakness did little to slow the steady march of institutional adoption. Several notable moves surfaced alongside the sell-off:

  • Delaware Life introduced Bitcoin exposure through a fixed indexed annuity tied to BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF, a rare effort to bring crypto into a traditional insurance product.
  • Trump Media said it plans to airdrop crypto tokens to shareholders in February, its first onchain incentive linked directly to equity ownership.
  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong used a Davos appearance to push for a U.S. crypto market structure bill, describing the legislation as a "win-win" for both the industry and regulators.

These developments underscore a widening effort by traditional finance and listed firms to embed digital assets into legacy frameworks, even while spot prices remain unpredictable.

Political Signals and Big Bets

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's remarks at Davos delivered a modest lift to crypto sentiment, adding to the sense that policy tailwinds could support the sector in the months ahead. The comments came as Washington debates how to formalize rules for digital asset trading and custody.
