Trump-promoted brand touts GOLD before token collapse

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

A cryptocurrency brand connected to promotional efforts around the Trump name touted a token called GOLD shortly before the asset's value cratered, according to on-chain data and now-deleted social media posts. Wallets linked to the project's team reportedly offloaded hundreds of millions of tokens as the price collapsed nearly to zero.

What Happened

The brand, operating as Real Trump Coins, published posts on X promoting GOLD to its audience before scrubbing those messages from the platform. Blockchain records indicate that wallets associated with the team sold roughly 224.5 million tokens during the same period.

As the selling pressure mounted, GOLD's market capitalization plummeted by about 99%, leaving investors who bought in during the promotional push holding a nearly worthless asset. The rapid decline and the subsequent deletion of the promotional content raised immediate red flags among observers tracking the token.

A token hyped to the moon lost nearly all its value while insider wallets cashed out.

A Familiar Pattern

The episode fits a recurring template in the memecoin and celebrity-adjacent token space, where projects generate hype around a recognizable name before insiders exit their positions. Deleted promotional posts and coordinated team-wallet sales are hallmarks that critics point to when describing so-called rug pulls.

Several dynamics fueled concern in this case:

  • Promotional posts were removed from X shortly after publication.
  • Team-connected wallets sold 224.5 million tokens.
  • The token's market value fell approximately 99%.

Why It Matters

Tokens that borrow political branding continue to attract retail buyers hoping for quick gains, but many carry significant risks and little transparency around who controls the supply. The GOLD collapse serves as another cautionary example of how quickly value can evaporate when insiders liquidate their holdings.

For investors, the incident underscores the importance of scrutinizing token distribution, team wallets, and the durability of promotional claims before committing funds. Association with a well-known name offers no guarantee of legitimacy or lasting value in the volatile world of speculative crypto assets.
