The funds were not siphoned through a stolen private key, but through a single fraudulent permission the victim signed without grasping its impact.
One Signature, Seven-Figure Loss
The attack highlights a stubborn weakness in the way onchain transactions function. When users grant spending permissions to a smart contract, they generally assume the request is legitimate and routine. Fraudsters take direct aim at that assumption, dressing up harmful approvals as ordinary wallet interactions.
In this case, the victim's private key was never compromised. Instead, the trader approved a request that quietly handed control of their tokens to an attacker, who then emptied the wallet.
The danger of approval phishing is that the victim effectively hands over the keys without ever giving up their private key.
How Approval Phishing Operates
Approval phishing does not depend on breaching a wallet's cryptographic secrets. Rather, it leans on psychological manipulation. Attackers construct transactions asking for permission to spend a user's holdings and simply wait for the owner to click confirm.
Once that authorization goes through, the scammer can withdraw funds whenever they choose, with no further sign-off required from the wallet's owner.
