Trade.xyz to cover SK Hynix perp liquidation losses tied to price anomaly

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

Trade.xyz has pledged to reimburse traders who suffered liquidation losses on its SK Hynix perpetual futures contract after an anomalous external price print sent the contract's mark price tumbling nearly 19%, the platform announced.

What Happened

According to Trade.xyz, an errant price feed originating from an external source caused the mark price of its SK Hynix perpetual contract to plunge by close to 19%. The sudden drop triggered a wave of liquidations, wiping out positions held by traders who were caught on the wrong side of the abrupt move.

The platform maintained that its oracle system functioned exactly as intended during the episode. Rather than a flaw in its own infrastructure, Trade.xyz attributed the disruption to the flawed external data point that fed into its pricing mechanism.

The oracle worked as designed, but that was little comfort to traders whose positions were forcibly closed.

Despite defending the integrity of its systems, the company acknowledged the real financial harm suffered by users caught in the cascade and moved quickly to address the fallout.

The Reimbursement Plan

Trade.xyz said it will cover the losses incurred by eligible traders whose positions were liquidated as a direct result of the price anomaly. The decision underscores the reputational stakes involved when derivatives platforms rely on external data sources to determine settlement and liquidation prices.

Key points from the platform's response include:

  • The oracle behaved according to its specifications
  • An external SK Hynix price print triggered the roughly 19% mark price decline
  • Affected and eligible traders will be reimbursed for liquidation losses

The incident highlights an ongoing challenge for on-chain derivatives markets that offer exposure to traditional assets like equities. Such products depend heavily on accurate, reliable price feeds, and even a single bad data point can cascade into significant losses for traders when leverage is involved.

For Trade.xyz, the move to make affected users whole signals an effort to preserve confidence in its platform, even as it defends the technical performance of its underlying systems.
