Swift rolls out new blockchain ledger to bring 24/7 banking to 17 global giants

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Swift, the messaging network that links thousands of banks around the globe, is rolling out a blockchain-based ledger designed to enable continuous, always-on financial services. The initiative unites 17 major institutions across six continents, marking one of the most coordinated efforts yet to overhaul how money crosses borders.

Ending Banking's Business Hours

The project takes aim at a persistent problem in global finance: transactions that grind to a halt once traditional banking hours close. By recording settlements on a shared distributed ledger, Swift hopes to show that legacy institutions can operate around the clock without discarding the infrastructure they already depend on.

For an organization widely regarded as the cautious backbone of international banking, the decision to embrace distributed ledger technology represents a meaningful shift in strategy.

By uniting established banks worldwide, Swift wants to prove distributed ledgers can plug into the existing financial system at scale.

Major Banks Prepare Live Tests

The lineup of participants includes some of the industry's most recognizable names, among them HSBC, UBS, Wells Fargo, and Citi. Crucially, the group plans to advance beyond controlled sandbox experiments and run transactions under real conditions.

That approach is significant. Testing in a production environment, rather than in isolated simulations, is intended to expose the practical obstacles that theoretical trials tend to overlook, offering a clearer picture of whether the technology can hold up at scale.

Key features of the effort include:

  • Support for tokenized digital assets
  • Live transactions rather than closed simulations
  • Participation from 17 banks spanning six continents

A Move Toward Instant Settlement

Swift's push aligns with a broader wave of large financial firms experimenting with blockchain rails to shorten settlement times and enable transfers that no longer wait for the next business day. The ambition is a system where value can move instantly and continuously.

The potential payoff is considerable. Should the pilot succeed, it could reset expectations for cross-border payments and nudge the industry toward round-the-clock settlement. For now, the collaboration serves as a large-scale proof of concept, with some of the world's biggest banks staking their reputations on whether the model can deliver.
