What Swift Is Testing
The experiment brings together 17 major international banks on a common ledger designed to let them swap tokenized deposits at any hour. That is a notable departure from the rhythms of conventional banking, where the movement of funds is bound by business hours, market openings, and settlement windows that do not run without interruption.
The logic behind the effort is simple. Much of the current cross-border payment machinery slows to a stop overnight and on weekends, stranding transactions until systems come back online. By supporting continuous transfers of tokenized value, Swift is aiming squarely at one of the most persistent points of friction in moving money between banks.

That disconnect opens a gap between how quickly tokens can move and when a transaction truly reaches finality. Value may look like it has been transferred immediately, but the actual settlement can still be held up by infrastructure operating on the old timetable.
Incumbents Wading Into Tokenization
The initiative underscores a wider push among established financial institutions to test blockchain-style tools as a way to modernize how money flows between them. Instead of leaving the field to crypto-native companies, players like Swift are trying tokenization to see whether it can iron out longstanding inefficiencies.
Even so, the pilot exposes the core tension of the moment: the front end of finance is racing toward always-on operation, while the back end remains tethered to schedules set long before tokenization existed.
