Strategy Sells $105M in Bitcoin as Dollar Reserve Hits $4B

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Michael Saylor's Strategy has sold roughly $105 million worth of Bitcoin, marking a notable shift for a company long known for accumulating the cryptocurrency rather than parting with it. The proceeds were split between funding preferred stock dividends and financing an $81 million buyback of one of its preferred share classes, as the firm's dollar reserve swelled to around $4 billion.

A Rare Sale From a Committed Holder

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has built its identity around aggressive Bitcoin acquisition, making any sale a departure from its usual playbook. The company offloaded about $105 million in Bitcoin, with half the money directed toward covering dividends owed on its preferred stock offerings.

The remaining proceeds were channeled into a buyback of STRC shares, one of the firm's preferred equity instruments. At $81 million, the repurchase represents the second such buyback in as many weeks, signaling a deliberate effort to manage its capital structure.

A company built on hoarding Bitcoin is now selling it to keep its financial machinery running.

Growing Dollar Reserves and Buyback Strategy

The move comes as Strategy's dollar reserve climbed to roughly $4 billion, giving the company a substantial liquidity cushion. That cash position reflects the increasingly complex financial engineering behind its Bitcoin-heavy balance sheet.

The back-to-back STRC buybacks suggest the firm is actively working to support its preferred share prices and meet its dividend obligations. These commitments have become a recurring feature of Strategy's operations as it leans on various financing vehicles to sustain its crypto-focused model.

Key details of the transaction include:

  • Approximately $105 million in Bitcoin sold
  • Half of proceeds allocated to preferred dividends
  • $81 million used for a STRC buyback
  • The second such repurchase within two weeks

While the sale is modest relative to Strategy's massive Bitcoin holdings, it underscores the ongoing balancing act between maintaining its digital asset treasury and honoring the financial obligations that come with funding it.
