Strategy cuts net leverage to near zero as cash nearly matches convertible debt

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Strategy, the bitcoin treasury firm formerly known as MicroStrategy, has effectively neutralized its net leverage after building a cash position that nearly matches its outstanding convertible debt, according to recent disclosures.

Balance Sheet Rebalancing

The company has quietly transformed its financial footing, accumulating enough liquidity to offset the bulk of its convertible note obligations. That shift brings its net leverage close to zero, a notable departure for a firm long associated with aggressive borrowing to fund bitcoin purchases.

The move reflects a more cautious posture as Strategy seeks to reassure investors about its ability to weather volatility in the cryptocurrency market. With cash roughly equal to convertible debt, the company reduces the risk that a downturn in bitcoin prices could force distressed asset sales or refinancing at unfavorable terms.

With cash now nearly matching its convertible debt, Strategy has effectively erased the net leverage that once defined its playbook.

Dividend Coverage and Buybacks

Beyond trimming leverage, Strategy has built up nearly four years of preferred-dividend coverage, giving it a substantial cushion to meet obligations to preferred shareholders regardless of near-term market swings. That runway offers a measure of stability for income-focused investors holding the company's preferred instruments.

The firm has also continued repurchasing its STRC preferred shares at prices below par, a strategy that allows it to retire obligations at a discount while returning value to the balance sheet. Buying back below face value effectively locks in savings for the company.

Key elements of Strategy's current financial position include:

  • Net leverage reduced to near zero as cash approaches convertible debt levels
  • Roughly four years of preferred-dividend coverage secured
  • Ongoing repurchases of STRC shares at prices below par

The combination of reduced leverage, ample dividend coverage, and disciplined buybacks signals a maturing approach for the bitcoin-focused company, which has increasingly balanced its ambitions with financial prudence.
