Step App winds down after four years as FITFI token sinks

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

Step App, one of the earliest players in the "move-to-earn" fitness crypto sector, has announced it will shut down its services by August 21, ending a four-year run as its FITFI token languishes near record lows.

A Move-to-Earn Pioneer Bows Out

The project, which rewarded users with cryptocurrency for physical activity such as walking and running, confirmed it will cease operations after struggling to sustain momentum in a niche that has largely fallen out of favor. Step App emerged during the height of the move-to-earn craze, riding a wave of enthusiasm that promised to blend fitness incentives with blockchain-based rewards.

The wind-down marks the conclusion of a business model that captured investor attention in 2021 and 2022 but has since faced mounting questions about long-term viability. Many similar projects have grappled with the challenge of keeping users engaged once token prices began to slide.

A model built on rewarding movement ultimately couldn't outrun the collapse of its own token.

FITFI Token Collapses

The closure comes as the platform's native FITFI token trades roughly 99.9% below its all-time high, a staggering decline that underscores the broader unraveling of the move-to-earn category. Such a drop leaves early buyers with holdings worth a tiny fraction of their peak value.

The move-to-earn sector, which also included high-profile names, saw explosive growth during the last bull cycle before demand evaporated. Critics have long argued that the tokenomics underpinning these apps relied heavily on new user inflows to sustain rewards, a structure that proved fragile once growth stalled.

Key details of the shutdown include:

  • Services will be discontinued by August 21
  • The project ran for approximately four years
  • FITFI trades about 99.9% below its record high

Step App's departure adds to a growing list of Web3 fitness ventures that have failed to translate initial hype into durable, self-sustaining ecosystems.
