Standard Chartered brings spot crypto trading to Dubai FX platform

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

Standard Chartered has launched institutional spot cryptocurrency trading in Dubai, becoming one of the first major global banks to offer Bitcoin and Ether trading through its established foreign exchange infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates.

A New Path for Institutional Crypto

The British multinational bank is now allowing institutional clients in the region to trade Bitcoin and Ether directly through the same electronic FX platform they already use to buy and sell currencies like the dollar and euro. By integrating digital assets onto its existing eFX rails, Standard Chartered is aiming to make crypto trading feel familiar to institutions that have long relied on the bank's traditional currency markets.

The move places one of the world's most established banking names firmly in the digital asset space at a moment when institutional appetite for regulated crypto access continues to grow. Rather than routing clients toward specialized crypto exchanges, the bank offers a route that fits within conventional trading workflows and risk frameworks.

Bitcoin and Ether now sit on the same rails institutions use to trade dollars and euros.

Dubai's Growing Crypto Ambitions

The launch reflects the UAE's push to position itself as a global hub for digital assets, backed by clearer regulatory frameworks that have drawn banks and crypto firms alike. Dubai in particular has cultivated an environment designed to attract institutional players seeking oversight and legal certainty.

For Standard Chartered, the expansion builds on its broader digital asset strategy, which has included custody services and other crypto-related offerings in select markets. Providing spot trading to institutional clients marks a deeper commitment to the sector.

Key features of the offering include:

  • Spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether for institutional clients
  • Integration with the bank's existing electronic FX platform
  • A regulated venue tailored to professional investors in the UAE

The initiative signals how traditional finance and crypto markets continue to converge, with major banks increasingly willing to serve as gateways for institutional participation in digital assets.
