It became crypto's first meaningful crossover product, drawing interest from major financial institutions eager to modernize legacy systems.
But Lee contends that the momentum is shifting. Perpetual futures — derivative contracts with no expiration date that let traders take leveraged positions on an asset's price — are emerging as a more scalable and flexible way to gain exposure to real-world assets without the friction of holding the underlying tokens.

Perpetual futures have already proven their dominance in crypto trading, where they account for a substantial share of total volume. Their appeal lies in offering continuous exposure, deep liquidity and leverage, all without the complications of custody or settlement that can weigh down tokenized assets.
Applying that model to real-world assets could unlock trading opportunities across a wide range of markets that are otherwise difficult to access on-chain. Rather than requiring an asset to be fully tokenized and legally structured, a perp can track its price directly, sidestepping many regulatory and operational hurdles.
