Russia's Sberbank Sees $46 Billion in Crypto Trading, Plans Ethereum and USDT-Backed Loans

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Russia's largest lender, Sberbank, is projecting a booming market for cryptocurrency trading, with a senior executive estimating volumes could reach 4 trillion rubles — roughly $46 billion — during the first year of operation, while the bank readies plans to expand crypto-backed lending.

A Bullish Forecast From Russia's Banking Giant

Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov shared the projection with state media, signaling Sberbank's growing appetite for digital assets. The figure reflects the bank's expectations for early demand as it moves deeper into the crypto space.

The forecast underscores how one of the country's most influential financial institutions views cryptocurrency not as a fringe activity but as a substantial and expanding market worth billions of dollars.

Sberbank believes crypto trading could generate roughly $46 billion in its very first year.

Popov's comments come amid a broader shift in how Russian financial institutions are approaching digital assets, particularly as the country navigates economic pressures and seeks alternative financial channels.

Crypto-Backed Loans on the Horizon

Beyond trading, Sberbank is preparing to broaden its crypto-backed lending offerings. The bank plans to allow customers to borrow against digital assets, with an emphasis on Ethereum and the USDT stablecoin serving as collateral.

However, the rollout hinges on regulatory approval. Sberbank has indicated it will move forward with expanded lending only once Russian regulators formally sign off on the framework.

Key elements of the bank's crypto ambitions include:

  • Trading volume projected at up to 4 trillion rubles in year one
  • Loans backed by Ethereum and USDT as collateral
  • A cautious approach tied to regulatory clearance

The dual push into trading and lending highlights Sberbank's strategy to position itself at the center of Russia's emerging digital asset economy, pending the green light from authorities.
