Ripple says asset managers are preparing for XRP Ledger’s next payments upgrade

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Ripple says asset managers are gearing up for a significant upgrade to the XRP Ledger, one that would allow linked asset and payment transfers to settle as a single, all-or-nothing transaction. The feature, known as Batch V1.1, has already cleared an extensive security review and is drawing interest from commercial projects, according to the company.

What the Batch Upgrade Does

At its core, the Batch V1.1 amendment enables multiple transactions to be bundled together so they either succeed as a group or fail entirely. This atomic behavior removes the risk of one leg of a trade completing while another falls through, a scenario that can leave counterparties exposed during settlement.

For financial institutions, that guarantee is more than a technical nicety. It mirrors the delivery-versus-payment models long relied upon in traditional finance, where the transfer of an asset and its corresponding payment must happen simultaneously to reduce counterparty risk.

Either the whole transaction goes through, or none of it does — no half-finished trades left hanging.

Why Asset Managers Are Watching

Ripple has said that commercial projects are already being built around the capability, signaling that professional players see practical uses beyond experimentation. The appeal lies in predictable, reliable settlement that can support tokenized assets, cross-currency swaps, and other structured payment flows.

The upgrade underwent a thorough security assessment before moving toward wider adoption, an important step given the stakes involved when large institutions handle value on a public ledger. That review process is meant to give asset managers confidence that the mechanism behaves as intended under real-world conditions.

Potential use cases being floated include:

  • Simultaneous asset and payment transfers that eliminate settlement gaps
  • Tokenized asset trading with reduced counterparty exposure
  • More complex, multi-step payment workflows executed as one unit

If adoption follows the interest Ripple describes, the Batch feature could strengthen the XRP Ledger's position as infrastructure for institutional-grade payments and tokenization efforts.
