Regulators invited Binance to seek new licenses after MiCA setback, co-CEO says

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Binance is pursuing new licensing routes across Europe after encountering obstacles under the region's flagship crypto rulebook, with co-CEO Richard Teng revealing that regulators themselves encouraged the exchange to seek alternative approvals following a setback tied to the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.

Working Through the MiCA Hurdle

According to Teng, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange is exploring fresh authorization paths across the continent after running into complications with MiCA, the European Union's comprehensive rulebook for digital assets. He said the suggestion to pursue new licenses came from the regulators themselves once the initial obstacle emerged.

The situation underscores how even the biggest names in the industry are still adjusting to MiCA, a framework built to standardize crypto operations across the bloc. Instead of pulling back from the market, Binance appears to be treating the difficulty as an opportunity to identify other compliant options within Europe.

Even the largest exchange in the world is finding that MiCA compliance is a moving target rather than a finish line.

A Strategy Spanning Two Continents

Binance's licensing effort is not confined to Europe. The firm has continued expanding its regulatory reach in Asia, where it has been pushing to obtain approvals and strengthen its legal footing across a range of markets.

That dual approach illustrates a wider plan to construct a global compliance base while addressing regulatory friction in the jurisdictions most important to its operations. Teng's comments suggest ongoing communication between the platform and European authorities rather than a breakdown in relations.

  • Continued regulatory dialogue after the MiCA challenge
  • Efforts to secure approvals in Asian markets

Doubling Down on Regulation

Teng emphasized that Binance intends to keep operating inside regulated frameworks as the worldwide rulebook for digital assets continues to develop. In recent years, the exchange has worked to rebuild its regulatory reputation and show authorities it is prepared to cooperate.

By actively chasing new licenses instead of retreating, Binance is signaling that it sees regulatory engagement as fundamental to its long-term ambitions. The message from the company's leadership is that compliance, rather than confrontation, will define its next phase of growth in both Europe and Asia.
