More MiCA-licensed crypto firms could exit EU market: Gate Europe CEO

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Some cryptocurrency firms that have secured licenses under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework may ultimately withdraw from the bloc, unable to shoulder the financial burden of ongoing compliance, according to Gate Europe CEO Giovanni Cunti.

The Weight of Compliance

Cunti argues that obtaining a MiCA license is only the beginning of a company's regulatory journey. The far greater challenge lies in maintaining the operational and legal infrastructure required to stay compliant over the long term. For smaller players in particular, the costs associated with staffing, reporting and legal oversight could prove unsustainable.

The MiCA regime, which establishes a unified rulebook for digital asset firms across the EU, has been hailed as a milestone for the industry. Yet the same rigor that lends the framework its credibility also raises the bar for participation, potentially thinning out the field of active operators.

Winning a license is one thing; surviving the recurring cost of compliance is another challenge entirely.

A Shifting Competitive Landscape

As Europe settles into its new regulatory era, the market may consolidate around larger, better-capitalized firms with the resources to absorb compliance expenses. That dynamic could reshape the competitive environment, favoring established exchanges and platforms over emerging challengers.

Cunti's warning underscores a broader tension in crypto regulation: the balance between investor protection and market accessibility. While clear rules bring legitimacy and institutional confidence, they can also erect barriers that push out companies operating on thinner margins.

Key considerations for firms weighing their EU future include:

  • The ongoing cost of compliance staff and legal support
  • Reporting and transparency obligations under MiCA
  • Whether market size justifies continued operations in the bloc

For the industry, the coming months may reveal just how many licensed firms can convert regulatory approval into a durable business model within Europe.
