Live updates: Bitcoin slumps as oil and bond yields surge to new highs

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Bitcoin retreated on Thursday as surging oil prices and climbing bond yields rattled risk assets, overshadowing central bank moves and fresh inflation data out of Europe and the United States.

Markets Under Pressure

The world's largest cryptocurrency slumped as commodity and fixed-income markets flashed warning signs. A jump in oil prices, combined with bond yields pushing to new highs, weighed on investor sentiment and pulled Bitcoin lower alongside other risk-sensitive assets.

The move underscores how closely crypto continues to track broader macroeconomic conditions. When yields rise and energy costs climb, appetite for speculative holdings tends to weaken, and Bitcoin has repeatedly demonstrated its sensitivity to those shifts.

When bond yields spike and oil surges, Bitcoin often finds itself caught in the crossfire.

Central Banks and Inflation Data

The European Central Bank raised interest rates earlier in the day, adding another layer of tightening pressure to global markets. Higher borrowing costs typically dampen demand for assets that offer no yield of their own, including Bitcoin.

In the United States, core producer price index data came in softer than analysts had anticipated. Even so, the underlying figures remained elevated, suggesting inflation is still running hotter than policymakers would like.

The mixed signals left traders weighing whether cooling price pressures might eventually ease the path for rate cuts against the reality that inflation has yet to be tamed.

ETF Flows Diverge

The day also brought notable activity in crypto investment products:

  • Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded a second consecutive day of outflows.
  • Other funds across the sector managed to turn green, bucking the Bitcoin trend.

The divergence points to shifting investor preferences, with capital appearing to rotate even as the flagship cryptocurrency struggles to hold ground amid the macro headwinds.
