Kalshi says CFTC hasn’t contacted it over ‘unusual’ $5B trading activity

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Prediction market platform Kalshi has pushed back against claims that a wave of nearly $5 billion in unusual Ether perpetual trades on its platform amounted to wash trading, saying the activity stemmed from its liquidity incentive programs. The company also stated that the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission has not reached out to it regarding the trades.

What Sparked the Scrutiny

Observers flagged a large volume of similarly sized Ether perpetual trades on Kalshi, totaling close to $5 billion, that appeared unusual enough to raise questions about their legitimacy. Critics suggested the pattern resembled wash trading, a manipulative practice in which the same party effectively buys and sells to itself to create the illusion of market activity.

Kalshi rejected that characterization, attributing the trading pattern instead to its liquidity incentive programs. Such programs are designed to reward market participants for providing liquidity, which can produce repetitive, uniform trades that may look suspicious to outside analysts but serve a legitimate market-making function.

Kalshi says the eye-catching $5 billion in trades came from liquidity incentives, not manipulation.

Regulatory Silence So Far

Perhaps most notably, Kalshi indicated that the CFTC — the federal agency that oversees derivatives and, increasingly, prediction market platforms — has not contacted the company about the flagged activity. That detail suggests regulators have not, at least publicly, opened any formal inquiry into the trades.

The episode arrives as Kalshi and similar platforms navigate heightened attention over how their markets operate and how volume is generated. Liquidity programs are common across trading venues, but they can blur the line between genuine activity and inflated metrics in the eyes of skeptics.

Key points from the situation include:

  • Nearly $5 billion in similarly sized Ether perpetual trades drew scrutiny
  • Kalshi attributes the activity to its liquidity incentive programs
  • The company denies allegations of wash trading
  • No contact from the CFTC has been reported

For now, Kalshi maintains that the trading reflects sanctioned incentive structures rather than any attempt to deceive the market, though the debate underscores ongoing questions about transparency in fast-growing prediction and derivatives markets.
