Jack Dorsey’s Block seeks US trust bank charter for Bitcoin, stablecoin

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Block, the fintech company led by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has applied for a US trust bank charter as it moves to expand its footprint in the digital asset space, targeting Bitcoin and stablecoin custody services.

What Block Is Proposing

The company's newly proposed entity, known as Builders Bank, would provide federally supervised custody for digital assets. If approved, the charter would place Block's crypto operations under formal regulatory oversight, a step that could bolster institutional confidence in its services.

Unlike a traditional bank, Builders Bank would not take customer deposits or issue loans. Instead, it would focus narrowly on safeguarding digital assets such as Bitcoin and stablecoins, operating within the boundaries of a trust bank framework.

A federally supervised charter would give Block's crypto ambitions a regulatory stamp of legitimacy.

Why It Matters

The pursuit of a trust bank charter reflects a broader trend among crypto and fintech firms seeking clearer regulatory footing in the United States. By operating under federal supervision, companies aim to reassure clients and partners that their assets are held to established standards.

Block's move aligns with Dorsey's long-standing enthusiasm for Bitcoin, and the company has steadily built out crypto-related offerings across its product ecosystem. A dedicated custody entity would complement those efforts.

Key features of the proposed Builders Bank include:

  • Federally supervised custody of Bitcoin and stablecoins
  • No acceptance of customer deposits
  • No lending or loan issuance

Should regulators grant the charter, Block would join a growing list of firms attempting to bridge the gap between traditional financial infrastructure and the digital asset economy.
