Jack Dorsey's Block Applies for Bank Charter to Custody Bitcoin

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Block, the payments and technology firm led by Jack Dorsey, has filed an application to establish a national bank as it seeks to bring its sprawling custody operations under a single regulatory roof. The proposed entity, called Builders Bank, would allow the company to hold Bitcoin and consolidate services currently governed by a patchwork of state-level licenses.

A Move Toward Consolidation

At present, Block operates its custody and money-movement services under more than 50 separate state money transmitter licenses. Managing compliance across so many jurisdictions is costly and complex, and a single national charter would streamline that burden into one federal framework.

The application signals a deeper commitment from Block to embed Bitcoin into its core business. Dorsey has long been one of the most vocal corporate advocates for the cryptocurrency, and folding custody functions into a chartered bank would give the company more control over how it holds and safeguards digital assets.

A single national charter could replace the tangle of more than 50 state licenses Block relies on today.

What a Charter Would Mean

Securing a bank charter would place Builders Bank under federal oversight, potentially offering greater legitimacy and operational efficiency than the state-by-state approach. For a company handling both traditional payments and crypto, that regulatory clarity can be a significant competitive advantage.

The push reflects a broader trend among crypto-focused firms seeking formal banking status as regulators sharpen their focus on how digital assets are custodied and moved. A charter can help bridge the gap between conventional finance and the crypto economy.

Key implications of the filing include:

  • Consolidating custody work now spread across dozens of state licenses
  • Enabling Block to directly custody Bitcoin under federal supervision
  • Signaling Dorsey's continued conviction in Bitcoin's long-term role

If approved, Builders Bank would mark another step in Block's evolution from a payments processor into a company positioning itself at the intersection of banking and cryptocurrency.
