Italy’s biggest bank triples staked Ether ETF holdings while cutting IBIT shares

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy's largest bank, has significantly expanded its exposure to a staked Ether exchange-traded fund, tripling its position to roughly $7.1 million, while simultaneously trimming its stakes in two spot Bitcoin ETFs.

A Shift Toward Ether

The banking giant's latest regulatory filings show a clear pivot in its digital asset strategy. Intesa Sanpaolo boosted its holdings in a staked Ether ETF, a product that allows investors to earn yield from Ethereum's proof-of-stake network while gaining price exposure to the second-largest cryptocurrency.

The move reflects growing institutional interest in staking-based products, which combine the appeal of spot exposure with the potential for additional returns generated through network participation.

Italy's biggest bank is betting bigger on Ether's staking yield while paring back its Bitcoin exposure.

By tripling its position, the bank signals confidence in Ethereum's staking model as a viable component of a diversified digital asset portfolio.

Cutting Back on Bitcoin ETFs

At the same time, Intesa Sanpaolo reduced its holdings across two spot Bitcoin ETFs, including a position in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, known by its ticker IBIT. The reduction suggests a rebalancing rather than a wholesale retreat from crypto assets.

The dual moves highlight how traditional financial institutions are increasingly treating cryptocurrencies as an active allocation, adjusting positions based on evolving strategy and market conditions.

  • Increased staked Ether ETF holdings to about $7.1 million
  • Reduced positions in two spot Bitcoin ETFs, including IBIT
  • Signals a strategic tilt toward yield-generating Ether products

Intesa Sanpaolo has been among the more forward-leaning European banks in the digital asset space, having previously executed proprietary crypto trades. The latest portfolio adjustments underscore its continued willingness to engage directly with the market as regulated investment vehicles mature.
