Itaú joins Brazil tokenization pilot with OpenAssets

By Diego Whitfield · · 1 min read

Itaú Unibanco, Brazil's largest private bank, has entered a tokenization pilot program alongside blockchain firm OpenAssets, joining an industry-wide effort to test digital versions of traditional financial products.

Inside the Pilot

The initiative, coordinated by Brazil's capital markets association ANBIMA, will focus on tokenizing fixed-income securities and investment funds. By placing these assets on blockchain infrastructure, participants aim to evaluate how distributed ledger technology can streamline issuance, settlement and record-keeping across the financial system.

For Itaú, the collaboration with OpenAssets marks a significant step in its broader digital asset strategy. The bank will use the pilot to assess the practical benefits and challenges of moving established financial instruments onto tokenized rails, from operational efficiency to regulatory compliance.

Brazil's largest private bank is putting traditional securities on the blockchain to see whether tokenization can reshape its markets.

Brazil's Push Toward Tokenized Finance

Brazil has emerged as one of the more active jurisdictions exploring the tokenization of real-world assets. Industry groups and regulators have increasingly backed pilots designed to test the technology in controlled environments before wider adoption.

The ANBIMA-led effort reflects a coordinated approach among financial institutions to build shared standards and infrastructure. Rather than each firm developing isolated systems, participants are collaborating to explore interoperability and common frameworks.

Key aims of the program include:

  • Testing tokenized fixed-income securities in a live setting
  • Evaluating tokenized investment funds
  • Assessing operational and regulatory implications for participants

If successful, the pilot could pave the way for broader deployment of tokenized assets across Brazil's capital markets, potentially lowering costs and improving access for investors.
