Iran’s Strait of Hormuz toll booth ran through a bitcoin exchange, U.S. says

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on BitBank, a Tehran-based cryptocurrency exchange that authorities say funneled hundreds of millions of dollars in bitcoin to Iran's Revolutionary Guards and processed payments extracted from vessels seeking safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

A Toll Booth on the World's Oil Highway

According to U.S. officials, BitBank served as a financial conduit for a scheme in which ships were charged fees to traverse the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to global markets. Roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply flows through the chokepoint, making it one of the most strategically sensitive maritime corridors on the planet.

The Treasury alleges that payments collected from these vessels were routed through the exchange, effectively turning the passage into a revenue stream. By moving the funds in bitcoin, the operators sought to obscure the flow of money and evade the reach of traditional banking sanctions already imposed on Iran.

A digital exchange became the tollbooth for one of the planet's most vital shipping lanes.

Crypto in the Crosshairs of Sanctions Enforcement

The Treasury says BitBank moved hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of bitcoin to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an organization long targeted by Western governments over its regional activities and financing operations. The sanctions freeze any U.S.-held assets tied to the exchange and bar American individuals and companies from dealing with it.

The action reflects a broader push by U.S. authorities to close cryptocurrency loopholes that adversaries have used to sidestep financial restrictions. Officials have increasingly focused on exchanges and wallet infrastructure that allow sanctioned entities to convert and move value outside the conventional system.

  • BitBank is accused of transferring hundreds of millions in bitcoin to the Revolutionary Guards.
  • The exchange allegedly processed toll payments from ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Sanctions freeze U.S. assets and prohibit American dealings with the platform.

The designation underscores how digital assets have become a recurring feature of geopolitical financial disputes, with regulators treating crypto rails as just another front in the enforcement of economic pressure.
