Iran eases currency rules to bypass US sanctions with crypto: Report

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

Iran's central bank has loosened its currency regulations to let exporters use foreign earnings and cryptocurrency to pay for imports, a move seen as an attempt to sidestep US sanctions, according to a report.

New Currency Rules

Under the revised framework, Iranian exporters can now use their overseas earnings to fund imports directly, without first being required to sell their foreign currency to the government at official exchange rates, the Financial Times reported. The change marks a significant shift for a country long constrained by tight capital controls and international financial isolation.

The policy effectively allows businesses to keep and deploy hard currency abroad, giving them more flexibility to conduct cross-border trade. For an economy squeezed by sanctions that cut Iran off from much of the global banking system, retaining access to foreign currency and digital assets offers a practical workaround.

For a nation locked out of the global banking system, crypto has become a financial lifeline rather than a luxury.

Sanctions Pressure and Crypto's Role

Iran has faced sweeping US sanctions that restrict its access to international payment networks, making conventional trade financing difficult. By encouraging the use of cryptocurrency alongside foreign earnings, Tehran is looking to preserve trade channels that would otherwise be blocked.

The country has previously turned to digital assets to ease sanctions pressure. Iran has permitted the use of crypto for imports in the past and is home to substantial mining activity, which authorities have at times leveraged to generate revenue outside the traditional financial system.

Key elements of the reported shift include:

  • Exporters keeping overseas earnings instead of converting them at official rates
  • Greater latitude to fund imports with foreign currency and crypto
  • A broader strategy aimed at working around US financial restrictions

The relaxed rules underscore how sanctioned nations increasingly view digital assets as tools for maintaining economic activity when access to dollars and mainstream banking is limited. Whether the measures meaningfully blunt the impact of sanctions remains to be seen, but they signal Tehran's continued reliance on alternative financial channels.
