FTX to distribute $900M to creditors in fifth payment round

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

The FTX Recovery Trust is preparing to release roughly $900 million to former customers and creditors of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange, marking the fifth round of repayments in an ongoing effort to make claimants whole after one of the industry's largest failures.

A Growing Repayment Effort

The latest distribution builds on a recovery process that has already returned substantial sums to those affected by the exchange's downfall. Since FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, the Recovery Trust and the company have paid out approximately $10 billion to creditors whose assets were frozen when the platform imploded.

The newest tranche of about $900 million continues a series of scheduled payments designed to gradually reimburse users who lost access to their funds. Each round has moved the estate closer to resolving the mountain of claims left in the wake of the collapse.

Nearly $11 billion has now flowed back toward the users who were locked out of their accounts.

Long Road Back for Users

FTX's failure abruptly cut off customers from their holdings, sparking a lengthy legal and financial reckoning that continues to play out through the bankruptcy process. The staggered distributions reflect the complexity of untangling the exchange's finances and verifying the vast number of outstanding claims.

For many former users, the repayments represent a partial recovery of assets they feared were lost entirely. The Recovery Trust has structured the payouts across multiple rounds, allowing eligible claimants to receive funds as the process advances.

  • The exchange filed for bankruptcy in November 2022.
  • Around $10 billion has already been distributed to creditors.
  • The fifth round adds roughly $900 million to that total.

As the recovery effort continues, additional distributions are expected to follow, gradually chipping away at the obligations owed to the exchange's former customer base.
