Firelight raises $8 million, expands beyond XRP as it aims to make DeFi less scary for fintechs

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

Firelight, a decentralized finance protocol focused on making DeFi safer for institutional players, has raised $8 million in fresh funding as it broadens its reach beyond the XRP ecosystem, the company announced.

A Safety Net for DeFi

Firelight is building a protocol designed to give fintech firms and investors a quicker path to recovering losses when DeFi platforms are hacked. The idea is to lower the perceived risk that has kept many traditional financial companies from fully embracing decentralized finance, an environment often seen as too volatile and dangerous for mainstream adoption.

At the heart of the model is a system that lets token holders back that protection. Owners of assets including XRP, bitcoin and XLM can commit their holdings to support the coverage pool, earning yield in return for shouldering some of the risk.

The pitch is simple: make DeFi less scary for the fintechs that have been watching from the sidelines.

Expanding Beyond XRP

The new capital arrives as Firelight looks to grow past its origins in the XRP ecosystem. By supporting a wider set of blockchain assets, the protocol aims to attract a broader base of participants and position itself as a cross-chain safety layer rather than a single-network tool.

The expansion reflects a growing appetite among crypto builders to court institutional money by addressing the security concerns that have long plagued the sector. Hacks and exploits have drained billions from DeFi platforms in recent years, and protocols that can offer credible protection stand to appeal to cautious newcomers.

Key elements of the Firelight approach include:

  • Faster loss recovery for fintechs and investors hit by DeFi hacks
  • Yield opportunities for XRP, bitcoin and XLM holders who back the protection
  • A push to broaden support beyond the XRP ecosystem

For Firelight, the fundraise is a bet that the next wave of DeFi growth will depend less on chasing high yields and more on building trust with the institutions still weighing whether to step in.
