Jan-Oliver Sell, the CEO and founder of European stablecoin issuer Qivalis, has predicted that the entire trade finance supply chain will migrate to stablecoins, signaling what he describes as a fundamental shift in how global commerce moves money across borders.
A Bet on Trade Finance
Sell's argument centers on the idea that traditional trade finance — the web of credit, payments, and settlement systems that underpins international commerce — is ripe for disruption. He believes stablecoins, digital tokens pegged to fiat currencies, offer faster, cheaper, and more transparent settlement than legacy banking rails that can take days to clear cross-border transactions.
For an industry long dependent on paper-based documentation and correspondent banking relationships, the appeal of instant, programmable settlement is significant. Qivalis is positioning itself to capitalize on that transition by operating as a regulated European issuer.
"The entire trade finance supply chain is moving into stablecoins," Sell said.
Europe's Regulatory Edge
Qivalis operates within the European Union's regulatory framework, where the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, known as MiCA, has established clearer rules for stablecoin issuers than exist in many other jurisdictions. That clarity has encouraged a wave of European firms to launch compliant products aimed at institutional users.
Sell's vision reflects a broader industry trend in which stablecoins are increasingly viewed not just as trading tools for crypto markets but as practical instruments for real-world commercial payments. Proponents argue the technology could reduce friction in supply chains that span multiple countries and currencies.
Key factors driving the shift, according to advocates, include:
- Near-instant settlement compared with multi-day bank transfers
- Lower transaction costs across borders
- Greater transparency and traceability for participants
Whether stablecoins can fully displace entrenched trade finance infrastructure remains to be seen, but issuers like Qivalis are betting that the momentum is already underway.
