Ethereum startup EthSystems bets privacy is key to getting banks on public blockchains

By Diego Whitfield · · 2 min read

A newly independent Ethereum startup is wagering that privacy technology will be the missing piece that finally draws traditional banks onto public blockchains. EthSystems, which spun out of the Ethereum Foundation earlier this month, is building privacy infrastructure aimed squarely at financial institutions.

Why Privacy Matters for Banks

For all the enthusiasm around public blockchains, established financial firms have largely stayed on the sidelines when it comes to networks like Ethereum. The reason is straightforward: transparency. Public ledgers expose transaction details to anyone who cares to look, a feature that clashes with the confidentiality requirements banks operate under.

EthSystems is positioning itself to solve exactly that tension. By developing privacy tooling designed for regulated institutions, the company hopes to make public blockchains viable for entities that cannot afford to broadcast client positions, trade sizes or counterparty relationships to the wider market.

Privacy, not speed or cost, may be the real gatekeeper standing between Wall Street and public blockchains.

The bet reflects a broader shift in how the crypto industry courts institutional money. Rather than asking banks to abandon their compliance obligations, firms like EthSystems are trying to bend the technology to fit regulatory and commercial realities.

Spinning Out of the Ethereum Foundation

EthSystems emerged as a standalone venture after separating from the Ethereum Foundation earlier this month. The move gives the team room to pursue commercial partnerships and build products tailored to institutional clients, work that can sit awkwardly inside a nonprofit foundation focused on protocol development.

The startup's focus underscores a maturing phase for Ethereum, where infrastructure builders are increasingly targeting enterprise adoption rather than retail users alone. Key elements of that push include:

  • Privacy-preserving transaction tools built for regulated entities
  • Infrastructure designed to meet banking confidentiality standards
  • A commercial structure independent of the Ethereum Foundation

Whether privacy tooling proves sufficient to overcome the many hurdles banks cite before touching public networks remains an open question. But EthSystems is clearly betting that confidentiality is where the conversation begins.
