Ethereum Now Lets You Pay for AI Without Revealing Who You Are

By Priya Chen · · 2 min read

Ethereum developers have introduced a new tool called zkAPI that allows people to pay for and access artificial intelligence services without revealing their identities, marking a notable step toward privacy-preserving AI interactions on the blockchain.

How zkAPI Works

The system lets users prepay for AI services using USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin, and then submit queries to AI models through cryptographic proofs. The core design ensures that no single party involved in the transaction can see both who a user is and what that user is asking.

By splitting these two pieces of information across the process, zkAPI aims to address one of the lingering concerns about interacting with AI systems: the trail of personal data and sensitive prompts that typically gets logged by service providers.

No single party ever sees both who you are and what you're asking the AI.

The use of zero-knowledge proofs, the "zk" at the heart of the name, is central to the approach. These cryptographic techniques allow one party to prove something is true without revealing the underlying details, making it possible to verify payment and access rights without exposing identity.

Why It Matters

As AI tools become more deeply woven into everyday digital life, questions about how much personal information these systems collect have grown louder. A service that decouples identity from query content could appeal to users who want to tap into powerful models without handing over a complete record of their behavior.

The integration with USDC also lowers the barrier for payment, letting users settle charges in a widely used stablecoin rather than navigating volatile crypto assets or traditional payment rails that demand identity verification.

Key features of the system include:

  • Prepayment using USDC for AI access
  • Cryptographic proofs that shield user identity
  • A design that separates who is asking from what is being asked

Whether zkAPI gains broad adoption will depend on how developers and AI providers choose to build around it, but the launch underscores Ethereum's continued push to blend financial tools with privacy-focused infrastructure.
